Eventuality (How it came to be)

My current project "Eventuality" began as a very basic concept back in August 2009.

I wanted to shoot a raw, gritty "slice of life" with no budget or fancy equipment, originally intended to be shot on a simple Sony 8mm Handycam. I was convinced to do otherwise and decided to shoot it in full HD, this way if I so chose to do so I could deteriorate the quality dramatically.

I would have no script just a brief outline of the events that were to unfold. Below is the synopsis:

Four friends do there usual Friday night ritual, some drink, some smoke. But they all discuss, argue, and compare there favorite films as they always do, but this night is different than most. This night will change everything....

Casting proved to be difficult from the very beginning. I only had one cast member locked and still needed four more. After a few months of desperation and thinking the project would fall through I finally had my cast. I even made the bold decision casting some of the actors from online reels. I was even able to acquire a good actor friend of mine who has been in the business for some 18+ years. So with that I decided to make the next logical step, produce it under the SAG no-budget agreement. After tons of paperwork and four months later from the initial concept of this "experimental idea" that was stuck in my head we were ready to shoot.

The story grew dramatically, my goal was to make the audience embrace these characters within a matter of minutes. But just as you do the whole dynamic of the story changes and your left asking yourself what did I just witness?

With the exception of being an hour behind schedule (completely my fault) the production ran smoothly. To my surprise the four main actors quickly became comfortable with each other, meeting the day of the shoot. The chemistry between them comes off on screen as if they were life long friends. My first "legit" production proved to me I was ready to take on more and that this was just the start of bigger things to come.

Eventuality is currently in post-production and will be entering the festival circuit in 2010.

Welcome to SoconFilms

This is the official blog for writer/director Chris Jensen-Soto, founder of Soconfilms.

For over three years now I've been writing as well as directing my own short films. It's been an interesting and sometimes difficult journey throughout, but I've learned so much in the process.

My goal and purpose is to bring back the true cinema experience, something that has been lost in today's films. Engaging the audience in profound muti-layered characters with a story that will keep you at the edge of your seat craving for more. I intend to bring fresh original films back into play, no more remakes please, the world is in dire need of a new breed of director.

Currently I'm working on my first SAG production, "Eventuality", it's an experimental short delving into the lives of 6 friends for one particular night. Putting them in a situation that could virtually happen to anyone, anywhere.

The short is currently in post-production and will hopefully be joining the festival circuit in 2010.
In the next coming weeks I will be updating this blog regularly posting the latest news such as my official website, trailers, demo-reel and past work. Stay tuned and have a great day.
